It is commonly known as North Indian Rosewood. It is a large, crooked tree with long leathery leaves having white or pink flowers. It grows upto 82 ft high and 6.5ft to 10ft in diameter. It is highly grown in Bihar, India. It can withstand average annual rainfall upto 2000mm and droughts of 3 to 4 months. It is sold internationally and is also used as fuel wood. Bihar is the largest producer of Shisham in India. It has medicinal benefits too, such as their seed oil and powdered wood useful in treatment of skin ailments. Traditionally, people in villages used its twigs as a toothbrush and tongue cleaner.
