National Pollution Control Day is honored in the memory of people who died in the Bhopal Gas Catastrophe in 1984 on 2nd & 3rd December. Many people died due to the poisonous gas Methyl Isocyanate, popularly known as MIC. Bhopal Gas tragedy ranks worst amongst all Industrial Disaster. This national Pollution Control Day is celebrated to raise awareness to prevent any industrial disasters. The day itself encourages us to adopt pollution control measures to secure our future.
In India, around 7 million people die due to air pollution, among which 4 million die due to indoor pollution. 9 out of 10 people in the world do not have safe air to breathe. Air pollutants affect our lungs, heart, and brain through mucous membranes due to minute size of their particles.
On this day, almost 45 tonnes of the hazardous gas methyl isocyanate escaped from a chemical plant Union Carbide Corporation that killed thousands of people within minutes.
Pollution stunts economic growth, and worsen the poverty and inequality for both urban and rural areas. Poor people who can’t afford to protect themselves from the negative impact of pollution, that ultimately leads to suffering.
In our current lifestyle, extra steps needs to be taken to control pollution
1. Reduce using personal vehicles
2. Reduce fireplace and wood stove
3. Avoid burning trash, and other materials.
4. Recycle and reuse
5. Say No to plastic bags
6. Use fans instead of Air Conditioner
7. Use filter for chimneys
8. Avoid usage of crackers
9. Avoid using Chemical products
10. Implement Afforestation
Practice 3Rs concepts namely Reduce Reuse and Recycle to avoid pollution and volunteer for cleanups in your society.
